Thinking Outside the Box (or Photobooth) - When it comes to 5x7 or 8x10 photos
Posted by Steve Behen
It has been a challenge for all of us to get through the back-order situation facing the on-site printing industry. Little did we know when we started the year that a Tsunami would impact our industry in the way that it has. Price gouging, rumor mills and web forum “half-truths” have added to the frustration.
We are always on the lookout for alternative solutions to the challenges that face us in regards to media supply. One of the formats continually challenged during this back-order situation is the 5x7. While not as popular as 4x6, there are a number of event and photobooth companies that have standardized on the 5x7 and/or 6x8 format. So what do you do when 5x7 is not available?
Why not use 6x8 as an alternative to 5x7? If you have a DNP DS40 printer for example, the cost per print for a 6x8 is the same as it is for a 5x7. If you have a Sony UPDR200 printer, the 6x8 format is less per print than the 5x7. Given the price gouging that we have seen in the market place for 5x7 (if you can find it), the 6x8 format seems like a much better alternative. You can offer a larger print than your competitor while justifying a higher price for your services. We call it, “thinking outside the box” or “turning lemons into lemonade”. If you are using programs like Darkroom Software for events, or Breeze Software for your photobooth, call us and we will help you with your formatting changes.
You can also apply this same ideal to 8x10 and 8x12. For example, if you have a DNP DS80, the cost per print for an 8x12 is the same as the 8x10 and you get 2 extra inches of paper for FREE!
