The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900

Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 In March of this year, Epson released the Stylus Pro WT7900. The WT7900 is the first aqueous inkjet printer to include a white ink. The white ink makes it ideal for creating mockups and proofs for the packaging industry. Epson has developed specific medias for the WT7900 including ClearProof film and CrystalClear film. Soon Epson will add MetallicProof film and ClearProof Shrink Wrap. While the WT7900 shares a similar name, the mechanical frame and some of the Ultrachrome HDR inks with its brother the Stylus Pro SP7900HDR, the two printers are very different. The WT7900 is not just a SP7900 with white ink. The WT7900 lacks Light Black, Light Light Black and Matte Black inks and the electronics, print head and driver modules are very different. The unique print head enables the printing of white and color simultaneously and is optimized for three modes of operation:
  • White on color (reverse print)
  • Color on white (surface print)
  • White and color in the same pass (white tinting)
The head is not optimal for color only printing and is much slower than the SP7900 (about half as fast.) Maximum resolution is 1440x1440 compared to 2880x1440 for the SP7900. Furthermore, due to the media and white ink, Epson does not recommend using the SpectroProofer with the WT7900. We have had customers expecting to buy the WT7900 and have it multi-task between package proofing with white ink and standard paper proofing. The WT7900 is a unique animal and should only be considered for its intended purpose, package proofing and mockups, which it happens to excel at. And compared to previuos methods, the WT7900 is a very economical solution. For more typical proofing applications, a better choice is the SP7900HDR or the Epson Stylus Pro SP7900EFI Proofing Edition.
