New Sony UP-DR200 Driver Released

Sony released a new driver today for the Sony UP-DR200. The new v2.0 driver enables what Sony calls the “Cut Mode” for the UP-DR200. When the cut mode is enabled the printer will perform an intermediary cut producing two smaller prints. In other words, media type 2UPC-R204 will produce a 4″x6″ print or, in cut mode, it will produce two 2″x6″ strips (photoboothers, this is what you’ve been asking for!). Media type 2UPC-R205 will produce a 5″x7″ print, or in cut mode, two 3.5″x5″ prints. Media type 2UPC-R206 will produce a 6″x8″ print or two 4″x6″ prints.

Photobooth customers love the “Cut Mode” feature!Sony UPDR200 with 2x6 Photo Strips

Our staff has been testing the beta driver for a few weeks now and it works like a champ. We also tested the 2″x6″ cut with a few of our Photobooth customers – they love it! (Visit PhotoBoothTalk.com for more booth news, info, forums.) The new v2.0 driver requires a firmware update (v1.14), both available from the Sony UP-DR200 support page.

Nice. I wonder if it will work for the 150 as well…

Hi Johnny,
No, unfortunately this new driver will only work with the Sony UPDR200. We have requested this feature for the UPDR150, but it seems Sony has no plans to update the driver for the 150.
Thanks,
Eric

I wonder if the driver works with express digital software

Yes, it works great with Darkroom. If you have questions, let us know. Thanks!

Will there be an update for the 20L Snaplab as well?

We use a sony picture station. I wonder if this will work for wallet prints. So far the 8in printer prints wallet prints, but you have to order them in multiples of 2 and it gets confusing. If someone knows, please let me know!

This driver will allow you to print 2×6 on 4×6 but it makes two cuts one for the leading edge of each 2×6 print.

Also please beware that if you only print (1) 2×6 print you have wasted a whole 4×6 panel of each color in the ribbon. Only use 2×6 for 2 copies at a time.

Hi,

I just purchased the DR 200, and have been having a really hard time with the download. I’ve tried downloading the firmware first and vice versa. When I unzip the files nothing happens, and I am unable to access or see a cut mode feature in my preferences. Any tips?
Thanks,

Hello Greg, Thanks for contacting Imaging Spectrum regarding the Sony UP-DR200 2×6 driver installation.

Uninstall the previous “Sony driver” from Add remove programs in Windows. (You’ll need to disconnect the USB cable to the printer.
Download the correct installation zipped file from the Sony drivers page. Two versions are available “Windows 7 32bit/64bit” and “Windows XP 32bit/Vista 32bit/Vista 64bit”

Sony Link
http://www.sony.net/Products/DP-driver/digitalphoto_printer/UP-DR200/index.html

~Once the Zip files are unzipped~
The Windows XP unzipped folder will only contain files and the Windows 7 unzipped folder will contain a “Setup” installer.

“Windows 7″
Run the Setup for and plug in the USB cable for the printer.

“Windows XP”
Plug in the USB cable for the printer and when prompted for the driver, browse to the unzipped folder named “DR200_XV_D_200″ . Click next to continue with the installation.

Set the 2×6 option by selecting the print size from “Printing Preferences” within the UP-DR200 printer properties for the printer.

Please let me know if this helps out.
Thanks,
-Russell

I was wondering if they had the cut mode for a mac driver. I only saw the windows drivers on the site. Thank you.

Tim, Sony is working on it. You will see it here as soon as we do.

Eric,

I just purchased a up-dr200 and I have installed the updated software for windows 7; however, it seems that I am only able to print 2×6 prints with a 4×6 print package. I have gone through the printer preferences and selected 4×6 but when I try and print via windows photo viewer I am given an “incorrect paper size error”? It will print a 2×6 though.

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited.

Hi Justin, Eric asked me to help with your Incorrect paper size error.

There are two selections when setting the size within printing preferences. Ribbon size and paper size.

In order to print a 4×6, both paper and ribbon settings should be set to 4×6.

When printing a 2×6, the ribbon size will be set to 4×6 and paper size should be set to 2×6.

Let me know if this helps out.

Eric, prior to upgrading to the new Cut Mode driver I was able to cut my 5×7 into 3.5 x 5. Now with the new driver installed it does not give me the option to cut smaller sizes than 5×7. Any help would be appreicated, I also tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall the 1.02 driver but it sill does give me the options to cut smaller sizes. I’m using 8.9 Professional ED on one computer and with the new one I’m using Core ED on the other, the one with Core is a new installtion of ED.

Hi Cedric,
I have asked one of our tech support specialists to contact you directly.
Thanks,
Eric

I removed the old driver and installed the “cut mode” driver and it keeps telling me I have the wrong paper. I have to have a wallet printed for a kid by this afternoon so I really need to figure this out. I sure hope you guys are still monitoring this discussion.

Hi Jaycee, Eric asked me to help with your Incorrect paper size error.

There are two selections when setting the size within printing preferences. Ribbon size and paper size.

In order to print a 4×6, both paper and ribbon settings should be set to 4×6.

When printing a 2×6, the ribbon size will be set to 4×6 and paper size should be set to 2×6.

I use photoshop and when I change one the other changes as well.

How do I print a 2×6 in ED. Do I need to create a new template.

Any word on a mac driver yet?

Hello Jaycee, Good question. A 2×6 custom size option and template will need to be created when printing to the Sony UPDR200 photo printer with Darkroom.

Create a notepad document named ‘CustomPage.ini’, add this text to the file.

[CustomPageSizes]
2×6 = 624,924

Now, save the file named ‘CustomPage.ini’ to the X:\ drive.
Do not put the document into a folder, just on X:\ is adequate.

Open Darkroom software and go to Setup>Products and Services. Choose the package group and package within the group that you wish to add the custom print size to. Once this is chosen, click “Add Local Print Item.” This option is located on the right side of the package setup screen.

The Add Package Item dialogue box will appear. This dialogue has a drop down menu at the top. Open the drop down list and look for the last item on the list called “Custom Sizes.” When you click on “Custom Sizes,” each of the sizes you created in the CustomPage.ini document will be available. You can now add these print sizes to your package group.

If you need help with the template, please take a look at the video training section. http://darkroomsoftware.com/videotraining/

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Hi Carter,
Visit this blog post and you will find a link where you can download the Mac driver for the UPDR200.
http://imagingspectrum.com/blog/2010/08/updated-mac-drivers-sony-up-dr200-up-gr700/

Hey again Eric,

Quick question: On imaging spectrum’s website featuring the DR 200, I don’t even see where the Mac OSX operating system is listed as compatible with this printer.

http://www.imagingspectrum.com/sony-updr200-digital-roll_printer-updr200.html

Can you help me find a more detailed specification sheet?

Also, with Windows XP, it appears that the Cut Mode driver only works with the 32 bit operating system, not the 64 bit? Is this true? Do you know if there are plans for a driver that can function in the 64 bit environment?

Thanks! Tommy

I am trying to uninstall the old updr200 driver from my computer running windows 7. I go to uninstall the old driver in order to install the 2.00 cut mode driver, but my computer says that it is unable to uninstall because the printer is in use….ITS NOT! not plugged in and no applications are using the printer. Please help. Thanks

TOmmy

I have downloaded and installed the driver, and I am printing single 2×6 prints, can you tell me how to get 2 2×6 prints out of 1 4×6 set of color? I have my ribbon set to 4×6 and my driver is 2.00. but I still only get single strips.
Thanks in advance

Chris,
Try setting the paper size to 2×6, leave the ribbon size on 4×6.

Hi,
I have the cut-mode driver installed, if I’m doing on 5×7 inch paper 3.5 x 5 inch print, one whole page is taken off, does that change?

Holger,
The new 2.0 driver still cuts 2-3.5×5 on a 5×7 piece of paper. When you set the paper size to 3.5×5 and 5×7 ribbon you still need to set 2 copies so it puts two on a page. Feel free to call us at (800)342-9294 with any questions.

hi.. i am havin difuclties locating the paper settings to configure 2×6

“Set the 2×6 option by selecting the print size from “Printing Preferences” within the UP-DR200 printer properties for the printer” is this directly in the printer menu or on the pc. i have update de drivers and i only get 3.5x 5 6×4 and so one…no 2×6

thanks

pablo

Pablo, you set that in Printing Preferences in Windows. You select 2×6 media size, 2 copies, and 4×6 Ribbon size.

This is going to be used in a quick and fast photo booth.
Going directly from a Nikon DSLR and using Nikon View 2, I want to select 2 different photos per print. I’m having a great deal of success printing 2 of the same photos, not so much a different photo. Am I overlooking something simple?

Jay, I am a Nikon guy but I do not use Nikon View 2. I am not sure how it works. Does it have packagizing capabilities to allow you to put two different photos on a page? If not, you probably want to look for different software. Feel free to give me a call here at 800.342.9294. Thanks, Bill

what is the best way to store the printer media, and how long can it be left in the printer?

Hi Jas,
No problems with leaving paper and ribbon in the machine. The only culprit is dust. For storing, any dust free place is good, zip lock bag, rubbermaid tub or the like. Let us know if you have any more questions.

When i print out a 4×6 picture the printer also spits out a small trimmed piece of photo paper right before the picture comes out is this normal?

yes, that is how the printer achieves “borderless” printing.

Hi

I have a sony updr200 printer used for a photo booth. After the picture is taken it takes around 5-6 seconds for the printer to start printing. anyway to speed that up

Hi Gary,
It would help us to know what software you are using to drive your photo booth. Please comment or you can send email to techsupport@imagingspectrum.com with more details and we can try to help speed up your UPDR200 printing.

its psremote software

Gary,
I just did a test with a 2.6 GHz Pentium Dual Core with 1 GB RAM and XP. I was using NKRemote and printing to a Mitsubishi CPD70DW printer. On Breeze I was doing 4 photos in two identical strips. After the last photo was taken it took 5 secs for the printer progress bar to clear and then about 6 seconds after that to start printing. Your time sounds correct. Possibly the only to make it faster is to have a faster processor, more RAM and faster bus speed but I am not sure that will speed it up much. Hope that helps.

Hello, do this drive update works on my brazilian printer?
The brazilian sony’s support said that the two systems is different, but i could try if i wanna.

Sorry my bad english.

Thanks

Can the driver be used to print other strip sizes (e.g. on a 4×6 => 1.5×6 and 2.5×6)

Ok, so i have a 2×6 layout for my photo booth strip. But i have 2 layouts on a 4×6, 1 layout is blue other layout is white. Anyway the printer can cut that into a 2×6?

The way i know of setting it up is selecting 2×6 print size with 2 copies but that only gives me 2 copies of blue layout not white

Jessie, Sony wrote the driver for the 200 to be able to print 2-2×6 on a 4×6 but it has to be sent as a 1-2×6, 2 times. The only way to print 2 different sides is to print a 4×6 and cut it in two or we have other printers that you send a 4×6 and it cuts it in two. The Shinko S2145 and the HiTi P510 series print that way.

Andy, Yes, the DR200 can print and cut 2-3.5×7 on 5×7 and 2-4×6 on 6×8 but must be sent as 2 copies like the 2-2×6.

Luiz,
There is not a way for us to test the Brazilian driver here.

Hello,

Has anyone heard of a dye sub that can perform different cuts other than the 2X6″ from 4X6″ paper BESIDES the Sony UPDR 200? The UPDR200 can do 3.5 X 5″ cuts from 5X7″ paper, or 4X6″ from 6X8″ paper, but nothing that resembles a vertical strip shape other than the 2×6 cut.

If nothing exists, is it possible to create a custom driver for a dye sub? Obviously, this would require a high degree of technical skill…..not sure if you can even hire someone to do this or if you would have to work with the company direct? We are wanting to use 5 by 7 paper with a vertical cut and wondering how impossible this would be.

I am also wondering what is meant by “2UP” in the printer sizes available for the HITI 720L. This particular printer lists 4X6″, 5X7″, 6×8″ and 6×9″ as possible print sizes but also goes on to list 4X6″-2UP, 5×7″-2UP, 6×9″-2UP. I’m wondering if these refer to a different type of “cut” that can be made?

Thank you!

Hi Golds,
All great questions. 4×6-2UP refers to the intermediary cut. In other words, 4×6 can be cut into 2 – 2x3s, 5×7 cut into 2-3.5x5s, etc. If you can obtain the SDK from the printer manufacturer you could write your own driver but like you mention it would take a software coder. We do have a customer using an 8×12 printer which will cut 3-4x8s, a very unique offering. Feel free to call us and ask to speak with one of our technical sales reps.
Best regards,
Eric
